Increasing patient engagement can have a net positive effect on your patients as well as your practice’s bottom line. EHR use is crucial in that regard.

Patients are more likely to access their electronic health records when their physician includes patient portal “touchpoints” during the visit. For instance, explaining how to access lab results online can lead to EHR engagement following the appointment.

Physician engagement is equally important. Studies have shown that physicians who use an EHR are more likely to order more complete blood count tests than those who do not use an EHR. This leads to better patient outcomes.

When patients are happy with their care and able to interact with their doctors more frequently, they become more engaged. That makes them more loyal, and thus more likely to spend money with physicians they trust.
